Dubai: Gurunath Meiyappan, the son in law of N. Srinivasan, the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and chairman-designate of the International Cricket Council (ICC), has been indicted on charges of betting by the Justice Mukul Mudgal Committee. The three-member panel, headed by retired judge Mudgal, said the allegations of fixing against Meiyappan required further investigation.
This committee, which was formed by the Supreme Court to investigate the spot-fixing and illegal betting that took place in the Indian Premier League last year, presented its 170-page report in which it states that the material on record proves that Meiyappan is guilty of betting and spot fixing and was the face of Chennai Super Kings.
The report also states that there is a conflict of interest with Srinivasan holding the post of the president of BCCI and ownership of IPL franchise and that it is a serious matter, which needs to be considered by the court. The committee has thus rejected Srinivasan’s argument that Meiyappan was just a ‘cricket enthusiast’.
The three-member panel was formed last October after the Bihar association filed a petition against the verdict of the two-member inquiry committee - comprising former judges of the Madras high Court, Justice T Jayarama Chouta and Justice R Balasubramanian of the BCCI.
