Granthi Kills Third Wife

The affair between a 'granthi' and a 'deva maa' (sui generic incarnation of goddess), both in their early 50s, who had secretly tied the knot, took a bloody turn when the man killed the latter with a short sword and then stabbed himself with the same in the Adarsh Nagar Park here.
The park happened to be their dating place for the last few months. It is learnt that 'granthi' Ranjit Singh of Bhagat Singh Colony and Surinder Kaur of Basti Mithu area, who was running a small temple in her house, used to meet in the Adarsh Nagar Park.
During their meeting on Thursday afternoon an altercation took place and the granthi repeatedly stabbed the woman to death. According to eyewitnesses, when the 'granthi' was trying to run away after killing 'deva maa', he was chased by some school children and nabbed. In the meantime the police also reached the spot and arrested him. Both were rushed to civil hospital. While the woman died due to multiple injuries and profuse bleeding, the accused was operated upon and was stated to be critical.
Enquiries revealed that Ranjit used to visit Surinder's dera and both had developed relations and got married secretly a few months back. Ranjit, who had married twice earlier, on Thursday, asked Surinder to accompany him to his house as he had already told his relatives about their marriage. But she refused to go and even kept her family in dark. Angered at this, Ranjit attacked her.
Division No 2 Police Station SHO Sukhjit Singh said that photos of their marriage had been recovered from the accused. Interestingly, Bittu, the deceased woman's son, who reached hospital after getting information about his mother's murder that his father had died two years back. Ranjit was booked under section 302 and 309 of IPC.
