Four killed as car falls into gorge, 9-month-old survives

Four persons were reportedly killed and one nine-month-old child was injured when a car they were travelling in fell into a deep gorge near Kaplani on the Mussoorie-Dehradun road late last night. The police came to know about the incident today morning and a team rushed to the spot. The help of the ITBP was requisitioned as the police found it difficult to remove the car and retrieve the bodies and evacuate the injured child.
The deceased have been identified as Surat Singh Panwar (38), his wife Poonam (36), six-year-old Shuarya and Aashish Rana (32). They all hailed from Gyansu in Uttarkashi district.
However, the nine-month-old child had a miraculous escape even as she lay in the open the whole night, said the police. The injured child was shifted to a hospital in Mussoorie while the bodies were sent for post-mortem.
According to the police, the family was on its way to Dehradun form Uttarkashi and when they car fell into the gorge. The driver of the car might have lost control over the wheel while negotiating a sharp bend near Kaplani and fell in the deep gorge. The ITBP jawans brought various equipment and ropes and brought up the bodies and rescued the injured child.
The bodies have been handed over the bereaved relatives after post-mortem.
