Al Ain: A firefighter died and two others were injured while extinguishing a blaze in Al Sarooj district, Al Ain, the Department of Civil Defence said on Thursday.

The incident took place two days ago when a fire erupted in a store. The department, however, did not disclose the identity of the dead and injured firemen. The injured firemen were treated at Al Ain Hospital.

The Civil Defence sources said it was a nine-hour long continuous operation as highly inflammable material stored in the place had caught fire. The fire generated thick black smoke and very high heat.

The police had evacuated the area and prevented pedestrians from going close to the burning store. The Civil Defence casualties, said the source, were also caused by the smoke and the heat-related stress.

Meanwhile, another fire on Thursday reduced a motor garage to ashes in Saniya, Industrial Area, causing a huge material damage. Nobody was, however, reportedly injured in the fire.

Eyewitness told Gulf News that a car was being repainted when the inflammable substance caught fire at around 1pm. The fire spread quickly, engulfing the entire garage, workers accommodations and the surrounding by shops.

Fire-fighters reached there swiftly and it took them more than two hours to control the fire.

The police and Civil Defence department have been investigating the both the cases.
