CWG: Delhi to get first tourist police station

New Delhi: Delhi will soon get its first police station catering specially to foreign tourists visiting the city for the Commonwealth Games and the policemen posted there will have a good command over English, officials said.

The new station, which is to start by the end of this month, would come up at Paharganj in central Delhi, an area that attracts lots of foreign tourists and backpackers thanks to the budget accommodation it offers. The locality has more than 901 guest houses and hotels.

"The police station will take care of the safety and security of the foreign tourists in particular as this area houses huge number of foreign tourists throughout the year," Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said.

"The existing station in Paharganj is located quite far from the zone where the majority of guest houses and hotels are situated. So the new station would be in the heart of the tourist zone," he said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Delhi) Jaspal Singh said: "The officers posted in the police station will all have a good command over the English language and would be able to deal with foreigners effectively and efficiently. The new Paharganj station will be called Paharganj East police station."

The strength of the new police station will be 150 police personnel.
