A woman employed with ICICI Bank in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh fell off the Grand Trunk Express and died while chasing a purse snatcher near Morena in Madhya Pradesh on Sunday night.

The body was brought to the Agra cantonment railway station where her father, who was travelling with her, lodged an FIR on Monday. The case was transferred to the Morena Government Railway Police.

The body was taken to Delhi after post-mortem in Agra and then flown to Guntur by air, the GRP said.

The family was travelling to Ajmer Sharif dargah to offer prayers for the father who had suffered paralysis in the past. They were supposed to change the train at Agra Cantonment.

“Mehbunnisa (30) was travelling with her father Sheikh Hussain Shahid (55) and her three-year-old daughter in a sleeper coach of the Delhi-bound GT Express on Sunday. A man in his 20s snatched Mehbunnisa’s purse as the train left the Morena railway station platform,” said Mani Kant Sharma, the GRP inspector at Agra cantonment railway station.

The purse had Rs 57,000 cash and three mobile phones.

Eyewitnesses said the purse snatcher jumped off the train but the woman lost her balance, and sustained a head injury.

“The train was stopped after the chain was pulled. The injured Mehbunnisa was taken to the coach. The train stopped at Dholpur station but her father chose to get down only at Agra where she was declared dead by a doctor early on Monday,” said Sharma.
