AMRITSAR: A woman allegedly kidnapped her 'husband' Narinder Singh, a 21-year-old farmer, on Wednesday and sought Rs 70 lakh as ransom from his family.

According to police, Narinder had never met Sonia and had got to know her over phone. SSP Amritsar (rural) Iqbal Singh said that Narinder, resident of Sant Nagar, Veraka was allegedly kidnapped by his Majitha-based "wife" Sonia.

Though Narinder had never met Sonia they became so friendly during the course of their telephonic interaction that they started referring to each other as husband and wife, Singh said. Narinder even used to ask his mother and sister to have a word with their "daughter-in-law" and "sister-in-law" over phone.

On Wednesday, Narinder got a call from Sonia to meet her in Majitha for a rendezvous. "But he never came back.Instead, his family received a call from Sonia asking for a ransom of Rs 70 lakh for securing Narinder's release," the SSP said.

Police have registered a case in Majitha police station and have begun investigations.
