Security boosted as Sai Baba battles for life

Puttaparthi: Spiritual leader Satya Sai Baba's condition continued to be very critical on Saturday, and the authorities are rushing more forces to this small pilgrim town to deal with any eventuality.

Doctors at Satya Sai Super Speciality Hospital, where Sai Baba is undergoing treatment for the past 26 days, said his vital organs, including heart, liver, kidneys and lungs, were not functioning properly.

As the 85-year-old spiritual leader is battling for life, representatives of the Andhra Pradesh government on Saturday held a meeting with the doctors attending on him and members of Satya Sai Central Trust.

Minister for Major Industries J. Geeta Reddy told reporters that Sai Baba's condition remained very critical. She said her visit was aimed at ensuring coordination among doctors, the government and the trust. She assured that all the required assistance would be rendered by the government.

Director of health and medical education Ravi Raj said Sai Baba's pulse rate and blood pressure had come down significantly.

Earlier, a health bulletin by the hospital said the guru's health continued to be very critical.

Meanwhile, fearing the worst, the authorities have rushed more police forces to the pilgrim town.

Meetings

The town was abuzz with activity as senior civil and police officials held meetings to make preparations for visits of VIPs and a large number of devotees.

More than 1,500 policemen were being mobilised from different parts of Andhra Pradesh. This is in addition to the 3,000 policemen already deployed in the town.
