CHANDIGARH: Raising doubts about another suicide pact barely a month after nine members of a moneylender's family committed suicide by driving their car into the Narwana-Bhakra canal near Karnal, on Monday eyewitnesses saw a Maruti car with four people inside rolling into Sutlej river near Anandpur Sahib.

While bodies of the two adults were fished out, the two kids are still missing and cops fear them dead. 50-year-old Gurcharan Singh, who was into iron business in Ropar, was driving the car. Other than Singh, his wife Jaswant Kaur and their two daughters Kuldeep Kaur (15) and Meena Kaur (12) were with him.

The bodies of the couple were found strapped with seat-belts, but as there were no seat-belts in the rear seats the kids were probably washed away in the river. The deceased's family members came to know about the incident only in the evening. Gurcharan's brother Sawran Singh said the family had gone to Anandpur Sahib to pay obeisance at the historic gurdwara in the morning. But cops told TOI they did not believe it to be an accident. They said there was a great possibility that Gurcharan might have driven his car into the river intentionally. Initial investigation by the police also pointed at a dispute in the family. Cops have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 CrPC.
