AMARINDER JOINS BADAL IN APPEALING FOR PEACE

Chandigarh June 23:
Former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh appealed for peace in the state and elsewhere in the wake of Sikhs protest against Dera Sacha Sauda Chief Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh after the killing of a community member in Mumbai allegedly due to firing by his security guard.
Singh at a press conference here appealed to the politicians to refrain from giving statements which vitiate the atmosphere. "We politicians give statements which vitiate the peace. We all should make efforts at having peace which alone can ensure development," he added.
To a question on the Dera chief apologising at the Akal Takht, the supreme temporal seat of the Sikhs at Amritsar, following Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh's stand off with the community in Punjab last year after he wore a dress similar to 10th Sikh Guru Gobind Singh, Amarinder said, "If an apology can bring peace he should do it."
For once Amarinder, who has been engaged in a running feud with the Badals, supported the statement of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal who appealed to the people to maintain peace in the state in the wake of Mumbai incident. "The Chief Minister has made the right appeal to the maintain peace," Amarinder said adding, "I agree with the Chief Minister that peace should prevail."
The Mumbai incident has pained him and was unfortunate, the former Chief Minister added. Asked if he would advise the Dera Chief to adopt the right path in view of the fact that the sect followers had voted in large numbers in favour of the Congress nominees in the last Assembly elections, Amarinder evaded a reply. "I will not make any statement . . . . . as object is to maintain peace," he told a questioner.
