It was the night of December 4 in Haridwar, Uttarakhand when 25-year-old Aman Malhotra, a resident of Kankhal, was driving back home after attending a wedding ceremony. His maternal uncle accompanied him on the way back. Disaster suddenly struck the atmosphere of merriment.

The leader of the Youth Congress wing from Bijnor, Rahul Choudhary and four of his friends reportedly stopped Aman’s car near Singhdwar. They dragged him out and started beating him brutally. Before he could realise what was going on, Aman was being hit with baseball bats, hockey sticks, and iron rods. The reason for this violence was an old fight where Aman stood by his friend whose sister was harassed by Rahul.

Even Aman’s uncle who came out of the car to help was also not spared. Rahul and his friends continued beating Aman until they thought was he was dead. His uncle was left with fractured arms and legs.

Aman was immediately rushed to the hospital. He has 70 stitches all over his body. He had internal bleeding in the chest and genital area. However, despite all the gruesome injuries, he survived the heinous incident.

An FIR was registered at the Kankhal police station. The police were ready to register the case under Section 307 (attempt to murder), however, within minutes they retracted their decision after coming to know about Rahul. They dropped the charges of Section 307 and booked him under Section 147, 148, 323 and 506 of the IPC. It is said that, as he is a member of Congress’s youth wing, Rahul has close connections with the state’s Chief Minister Harish Rawat, who belongs to Congress.

On visiting Rahul’s Facebook profile, several photographs of him were found where he is standing close to the CM in rallies, which suggests his strong political connections.

Aman’s friend and relatives started a campaign on Twitter with #JusticeForAman, seeking punishment for the perpetrators. Even after repeatedly making appeals to CM Rawat and Congress President Rahul Gandhi over social media, no action has been taken so far against Rahul. He is at large even after almost three weeks of the incident.

The acting investigation officer of this case, Inspector Vedpal told, “We have been trying to arrest Rahul for quite some time, but he is on the run.” But, on the other hand, Rahul has regularly been updating his Facebook.

But, the SHO of Kankhal police Station Jawahar Singh told that the reason they have not been able to catch the culprits is because they were given wrong names of the accomplices in the FIR. And this has hindered their process. The police seem to have realised that they do not have the correct names of the accused. When we asked if they reached out to the victim to get the right names, the SHO did not want to answer any more questions.

The political nexus is flouting justice openly, and no action is being taken. Time and time again, it is being seen that people with political connections and power can get away with any crime. Such lackadaisical attitude and collusion of the police with the political powers is what is causing people to lose faith in the police force and judicial system.
