Thanks to the watchful eyes of a 23-year-old engineer, Kurla station in Mumbai averted a major mishap on the busy morning of Monday after the boy spotted that a fishplate on the Harbour line – the metal bar bolted to the ends of two rails to join them together in a track – had become loose.
Gururaj Sakpal was on his way to work in Andheri on Monday morning, he was waiting for a train on platform 7 at around 7.30 am while he spotted a 2-inch crack on the track. Because of his enthusiasm for trains, he could understand it could be a sign of danger. Without further ado, he immediately reported about the crack to the motorman of the train standing there and also called up the railway helpline.
The railway officials acted swiftly and a team of workers was immediately dispatched to take care of the damaged track.
The repairs led to a minor delay in train services on the Harbour line and services resumed at 8 am. Surprisingly, another crack was found on the track near Wadala on Monday. Later, a caution order was issued to all trains to stick to a speed limit of 10 kmph.
