The Aluva police on Sunday arrested a yoga teacher from Alappuzha on charges of raping a widow and duping her of Rs 31 lakh by promising to ward off evil spirits. The accused, who allegedly raped the widow for about five years from 2010, also purchased a car using the money swindled from her.
Ramachandran (39) of Perumbalam near Cherthala, who used to come to the woman's house, gave her a sedative under the guise of 'medical purpose' before raping her. When the woman threatened to disclose the sexual exploitation after a few instances, the accused warned her of performing black magic on her children, said the police. The woman's five-year-long ordeal came to light when she was taken to a psychiatrist for counselling. The accused was then arrested by the police on a complaint filed by the woman.
Ramachandran approached the woman in 2010 after verifying her family background. Though the accused was a yoga teacher, he made the widow believe that he has healing powers and knows to perform puja.

Aluva circle inspector T B Vijayan said the accused had pledged two properties of the woman in a bank apart from swindling money from the widow. "The bank loans were not repaid. The whole series of sexual exploitation came to light when she underwent a psychiatric counselling. The woman was mentally disturbed and was not aware of the financial misdeeds done by the accused," said Vijayan.
The accused had spent the money swindled from the woman to buy a car and a few other properties. The police are checking whether the accused had exploited others in similar fashion. The police are also suspecting the involvement of more people in the case. Ramachandran was produced before the magistrate and remanded in judicial custody on Sunday.
