Kolkata July 7:

The Indian recurve women’s team comprising Laishram Bombayla Devi, Deepika Kumari and Chekrovolu Swuro earned three Olympic quota places after defeating France 216 to 213 points in the first round of the team event of the World Archery championship at Turin in Italy.

However, the Indian men were not so lucky. The team, comprising Rahul Banerjee, Tarundeep Rai and Jayanta Talukdar, was beaten by a point by the Chinese team, the score being 216-215 in favour of the china according to a report received by Indian Archery Association here. In normal course, India would have been out of contention for Olympic berths but as luck would have it, Olympic Games’ host Great Britain also qualified defeating Chinese Taipei.

Since Great Britain has already been assured of three quota places as the host, India is in the play-off for the three berths, the results of which will be known later. World champion Korea, China and Ukraine assured themselves of six quota places (three men and three women). Italy, France, the USA and Mexico made it to London from the men’s section. India, Georgia, Denmark, Chinese Taipei and Russia qualified from the ladies’ side.
