A 22-year-old woman was arrested for strangling her niece and hiding the body in a bed box in her house in Mustafabad of northeast Delhi as she suspected her sister-in-law (bhabhi) of having an affair with her husband.
The accused woman, Roshan Jahan, had cooked up a story about the child, Aisha, being kidnapped from the market and had even joined in the search. However, when neighbours found a stench coming from her house, they opened the bed box and found the child's body stuffed inside it.
Police said that Jahan had called Aisha to her house offering fruit juice and then strangled her. After hiding the body in the bed box, she neatly arranged the room to hide evidence of the crime. When Aisha's mother came looking for her on Monday afternoon, she denied having seen her.
A case of kidnapping was registered and during the probe Jahan said that she had seen the child walking to the market from where she could have been abducted. She even tried to blame Aisha's mother of negligence. Posters with the child's photograph were also put up at the local mosque to know her whereabouts.
Initially, an unpaid midwife was considered a suspect, but no evidence was found against her.
A day later, when neighbours complained about the foul smell coming from Jahan's house, she tried to pass it off as a dead rat. But when the stench got stronger, the neighbours opened the bed box and found Aisha's body. "A team led by ACP Gokulpuri Dharam Dev arrested Jahan following which she confessed to having murdered the child," said Ajit Singla, DCP (northeast).

Jahan told the police that she decided to take revenge after finding the child's mother and her husband in a compromising position. As she was close to her sister-in-law, nobody suspected her for the crime and police and neighbours returned from her house satisfied with her word.
A relative, Mohammad Salman, told the police that at the time of the incident the child's parents had gone out to buy grocery, while Jahan's husband was in Bijnor for a wedding. He claimed that Jahan and the child's mother lived on the same floor and were often seen quarrelling.
