A woman jumped off a moving train with her 10-month-old daughter , who had blood cancer, in her arms early on Monday near the Vashi creek. The woman died, the baby was found alive nearly five hours later.
Police said the 30-year-old woman (we are not identifying her to protect the child) was travelling with her baby in a ladies compartment of a Panvel-bound train from Kurla around 12.05 am. As the train entered the bridge over Vashi creek, she jumped out clutching her baby to her chest.
“A few passengers spotted her jumping off the train and informed our constables about it. Our officials reached the spot after sometime but could not find the woman and the child in the dark. Around 5 am, we sent another team to the spot and they found the two. Because of low tide, they did not fall in the water and were lying on the marshy land under the bridge,” said Pramod Dhawade, senior police inspector of Vashi government railway police.
“We rushed both of them to Rajawadi hospital in Mumbai, but the mother was declared ‘brought dead’ by the doctors. The baby has suffered injuries to different parts of her body. She is now under medical observation in the same hospital,” Dhawade said.
Police identified the woman from a ration card they recovered from her bag and then informed her parents who live in Seawoods. Dhawade said the woman’s family told him the baby was suffering from blood cancer and that she had been struggling to arrange funds for treatment.
A friend of the family said, “the woman married a man from Pune against the wishes of her parents in 2014 after her first marriage did not work out. However, she did not have a smooth family life with her second husband either. Around two months ago, her husband brought her and the baby to her parents’ place at Seawoods and went away saying that he would not take them back. He was the baby’s father.”
The woman’s father works with a private company and her mother is a home maker. Though a local organisation was helping pay for her baby’s treatment, it was not enough and so the woman started working in a shopping mall around two weeks ago, the family friend added.
“She called her husband on Sunday on his phone, but the conversation turned into a heated argument within a few minutes. She might have lost hope and thus decided to take the drastic step,” this person added.
Inspector Dhawade said, “Her husband is still in Pune and we have not called him for enquiries so far. We have registered an accidental death case. Her body has been delivered to her family after post-mortem was conducted in the hospital. The post-mortem reports are yet to come.”
