A 20-year-old woman, who had come to Delhi to look for a job, was driven around in a car for over two hours and raped by a man posing as a cab driver in south Delhi’s Moti Bagh area.
Police said the woman was waiting outside All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at around 9pm on Thursday for a conveyance to go to Noida when the man in a car bearing a ministry of home affairs parking sticker offered to drop her home.
Investigations revealed that the car belongs to one Mohit Pawar, a resident of Kotla and the son of a CISF head constable. He told the police that he had purchased the car a few months ago and appointed Aman as the driver a week ago.
Pawar said the MHA sticker had expired and he had put it on the car’s windshield to avoid paying toll tax.
In her statement to the police, the woman alleged that Aman, who claimed that he ran the shared cab, called out to her and asked her where she wanted to go. When she told him that she wanted to go to Noida, he told her that he was going that side and would drop her for Rs 20.
After she got inside the car, Aman drove her around AIIMS, RK Puram and then Moti Bagh. She alleged that when she asked him where he was going, he threatened to kill her.
“She alleged that the driver took her to a secluded spot in Moti Bagh where he raped her inside the car. She said that he locked all the doors and overpowered her,” a police officer said.
The woman told the police that she fought back and somehow managed to escape from the car. She ran to the main road, where she saw a police control room (PCR) van patrolling the area and approached the policemen.
“At around 1:30 am, a motorcycle patrol party of South Campus was flagged by a woman who alleged that she was raped,” DCP South, Ishwar Singh said.
“The personnel heard her out and without losng time, called the emergency response vehicle. Within the next 15 minutes, the patrol bike and ERV Gypsy, started searching for the suspect’s car but he could not be located. The woman’s statement was then recorded and her medical was conducted”.
A case of rape was registered and the hunt to nab the driver was launched,” he added.
According to sources, three teams were formed to search for the car, which was found abandoned near Moti Bagh, 100 meters away from the spot where the woman was allegedly raped.
The police then immediately traced the owner from the car’s registration number to Kotla Mubarakpur.
“The registered owner was questioned and he informed that the car was being driven by one Aman, a resident of Moti Bagh. On this information, his phone was put on surveillance and his call detail records were accessed. Many of his friends were then rounded up for questioning,” Singh said.
Around 2 am, Aman was found drinking along with one of his friend near Moti Bagh. He was then taken to the police station and questioned. “He broke down during questioning and confessed to the crime,” police said.
Later, experts from RFSL were requisitioned and a thorough search and inspection of the car was carried out. The police have also seized several exhibits including the woman’s mobile phone from the car.
The incident comes four years after the 2012 Delhi gang rape that triggered widespread protests, forcing the government to bring in a more stringent law to deal with rising crimes against women.
The 23-year-old paramedical student was brutally gang-raped by six men in a bus on December 16, 2012, and left to die on the road. She had boarded the bus after she failed to get a conveyance.
Since then, rape continues to top the city’s heinous crime figures, with a case registered every four hours, according to data.
