The Congress has said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement of demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes would put farmers, small businessmen and common people to inconvenience.
Terming the measure “insane”, Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari took a dig at Modi, describing him as the “modern day Tughlaq” who had thrown a “nuclear trident at poor people of India.

Here is what others had to say about the surprise move by the government:
Anil Kumble, veteran leg-spinner and India’s head coach: “Massive googly bowled by our Hon. PM @narendramodi today. Well done Sir! Proud of you!! “
Rajinikanth, actor: “Hats off @narendramodi ji. New india is born #JaiHind.”
Amitabh Bachchan, actor: “T 2435 - the new 2000 rs note is PINK in colour ... the PINK effect ..!!”

Amit Shah, BJP president: “I welcome the decision of the government to ban Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes. On behalf of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), I congratulate the Prime Minister for taking such a brave step. This fight against black money will continue. Decisions like forming SIT were earlier taken for the same.”
“I believe his step against black money is no less than surgical strike. It will not only be a problem to those keeping black money, but also give a major blow to those indulging in the business of fake currency. It will give a strong message to those having black money.”
Mamata Banerjee, Trinamool Congress leader and West Bengal chief minister: Banerjee did not seem amused. She said she was against black money, but “deeply concerned about common people, small traders”. The CM posted on Twitter: “This is a financial chaos and disaster let loose on the common people of India.”

Pawan Varma, JD-U leader: Varma said the blueprint has to be studied and an assessment has to be made on both the substantive measures taken and its implementation and what inconvenience it may cause on the citizen. “However, certain issues comes to my mind on a tentative basis, the first is that the cause of the black money in our country is the nexus between politics and unaccounted money. Now, so long as you don’t initiate electoral reforms to short-circuit that nexus, somehow the black marketers in our country are ingenious than laws. And politics and politicians are complicit in this...I am yet not clear as to how the new currency that has been introduced will not be also counterfeited.”

Ramdev, yoga guru: “I would like to congratulate Prime Minister Modi for making such a good decision on black money. It is appreciable that India has such an honest and patriotic Prime Minister.”
Chanda Kochar, MD and CEO of ICICI Bank: Kochar said the move will give a sharp boost to all formal channels of payment which in turn will help the formal economy to grow.
Harshavardhan Neotia, FICCI: Neotia said the move will have debilitating impact on the parallel economy in the country as well as deal a body blow to terror financing.
“This is an extremely bold move by the Prime Minister and will have a debilitating impact on the parallel economy in the country as well as deal a body blow to terror financing. FICCI completely supports this move of the government and complements it for its continuous and comprehensive measures to deal with the issue of black money in the country.”
“There could be some inconvenience that this change may lead to for the people of our country for a few days. However, we are sure that government and RBI will take adequate measures to ensure the transition happens smoothly. We appeal to all sections of society to support this initiative and help India’s economy gain strength by addressing the menace of black money and illicit transactions.”
Indian-Americans: “I congratulate PM Modi for this, big action against black money,” said Dildar Singh.
“It was a sudden decision but it is a bold move to curb corruption,” said Shakeel Abbasi.
