What is the point of Khalistan?

I've been reading a lot (recently) about Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale & the 1984 Operation Blue Star and I've been wondering... what exactly is the point of establishing a Khalistan?

Is it supposed to be like an act of rebellion/revenge/self-segregation?
