Outgoing US ambassador to India Timothy Roemer reiterated that the US remains committed to the 2008 NSG waiver to India for carrying out nuclear commerce. Doubts were raised over the NSG waiver, which allows sale of enrichment and reprocessing (ENR) technology to India, as the group recently decided to ban transfer of ENR to countries which had not signed the NPT.
"Having come from the White House and Washington DC recently, I would like to say the White House and Obama administration strongly and vehemently support the clean waiver for India," Roemer said while interacting with reporters at India Gate where he made his farewell speech.
"Secondly, the 123 civil nuclear legislation also underscores our support for India in this debate that is going on. Thirdly, our law clearly points out to clean waiver for India. So the President firmly supports it, the 123 agreement firmly supports it and our law firmly commits us to it," he added. He expressed hope that the 2006 India-US civil nuclear deal will move forward positively with New Delhi's willingness to ratify the Convention on Supplementary Compensation (CSC) for nuclear damage.
Roemer said ties between the two countries were moving in the right direction despite the "occasional hiccup or challenge". "There are really positive stories going forward that define the relationship, and I hope the media will, quite frankly, concentrate on those good news stories as well as the occasional hiccup or challenge that takes place in the relationship," he said while replying to queries about the treatment meted out to Indian diplomats in the US including the pat down Indian ambassador Meera Shankar was subjected to.
Shankar and a few other diplomats were subjected to pat down searches at US airports recently over which India had registered its protest. Criminal charges were also pressed against Krittika Biswas, daughter of an Indian diplomat, only to be dropped later. Indian consul general in New York Prabhu Dayal too was slapped with forced labour charges by his former housekeeper.
