A 14-year-old boy left his home in Indirapuram on Saturday evening, to fulfil his dream of climbing Mount Everest. Police later traced him to Tanakpur district of Uttarakhand, along the India-Nepal border.
According to the boy’s parents, he left a note for them and sneaked out of the house when they went to the market. He also took some money with him.
“When we came home, we found a note in his room which said he was going to accomplish his dream of climbing Mount Everest. We looked for him in the neighbourhood and the bus depots nearby, but could not find him anywhere,” said the boy’s mother.
The parents filed a written complaint at the Indirapuram police station the same evening, and police registered a case of kidnapping against unknown persons.
“The parents told us that they suspected someone had tricked him into leaving the house and also convinced him to bring money with him. By law, a case of kidnapping is lodged if any person below the age of 16 years goes missing from their home,” said Sheelesh Yadav, station house officer, Indirapuram police station.
The boy’s phone number was given to the police, which was put on surveillance so his location could be traced.
“The whole night we kept calling on our son’s phone but he did not pick up. Sometimes, the phone would ring and sometimes it was out of reach,” the mother said.
On Sunday morning, the boy’s first location was traced to Garh town in Uttar Pradesh. By Sunday evening, his location was traced to Uttarakhand.
“At around 7 pm, the boy called his parents from a public telephone in Tanakpur, Uttarakhand to tell them he was fine and that they need not worry. As soon as we tracked his location, the local police in the area were informed and they recovered the boy from the spot,” said Yadav.
Indirapuram police and the boy’s parents then went to Tanakpur to receive the boy. He told his parents that he had boarded a bus from Anand Vihar after looking up the Internet about how to each Nepal.
“We are very thankful to the police who acted promptly and recovered our son,” the boy’s mother added.
