t has been revealed that the government departments in the United Kingdom face nearly 20,000 email-based attacks per month. Meanwhile, experts point to China as the main source for attacks.

Despite the fact that it was the private sector raising panic over concerns following the PlayStation Network security breach, it appeared to be British government that faced constant attacks. The statistics reveal that the public sector is still remembered by people seeking to steal data. According to the report, during the last year, there have been registered hundreds of heavy pre-planned attempts of attacks at the Treasury’s computer system. In fact, there have been not one but several attacks every day, which made the Treasury the most popular target in Whitehall.

Technical Director of Pentura, Paul Cronin, confirmed that the statistics sound accurate, and even may be too modest in comparison with the Chancellor claims. Undoubtedly, there are a lot of criminal organizations out there looking forward to conducting these attacks in order to gain data.

However, the most shocking fact is that the threat also comes from foreign government agencies. Precisely, the experts confirmed that much of the attacks seem to be coming from China, whose government doesn’t even bother to hide the fact that the special people are trained to do that. Meanwhile, the figure of 20,000 attacks per month only includes detected threats, and with those undetected it may be a few times higher.

During the Google Zeitgeist conference, one of the most popular kinds of attacks has been described. Such attack has occurred within 2010 with an email related to G20. The email in question was swapped for a malicious file and put to the same distribution list. With this kind of attack, the recipient would have simply thought that the attachment had been repeated and sent twice. Luckily enough, the government’s systems managed to recognize the threat and stopped the attack.

Finally, the authorities convince everyone that they are working hard in order to ensure the adequate protection from all those attacks. Precisely, they state that the Coalition is not going to take this challenge “lying down”.
