Tyre Maintenance

Just like a car requires regular check-ups and servicing, tyres also need regular checks. Here are a few tips on how to check and maintain your tyres.

Tyres are the most vital part of a car since it is the only portion of the car that is connected to the tarmac, taking all the pain to make the driver’s life comfortable. Although, if not taken care of properly, tyres wear out sooner than expected and can also prove to be hazardous in an emergency. The following DIYs will tell you on how to take good care of your tyres.

1. The one rupee coin theory: Uneven wear and tear of tyres can happen quite often with bad roads. In case of uneven tread wear, a car may lose control with one tyre but may have control in the rest. This will give the driver three wheeled brakes, therefore turning the car in least expected direction. So, if you did not want to hit that tree, you just might.

Take a one rupee coin and put it in the treads over the surface. If the depth of the coin looks even, the tyre is having a uniform wear and tear over the whole surface. This exercise has to be done with all tyres and repeated every month or so. If the road traveled is smooth, the check-up can be done every three months. It would also depend on the type of vehicle owned. A 3-box sedan’s tyre needs more care than an SUV’s tyre.

2. Wheel Alignment and Balancing: Make sure to get you car’s wheel alignment and balancing checked regularly. This is noticed in a car when it tends to pull to one side or the other, instead of going in a straight line, even at normal speeds. The steering wheel also tends to vibrate while driving. This is when the tyres suffer uneven tread wear and if not taken care of there would be uneven wear and tear which affects the ride quality of the car and may also damage the suspension in the long run.

The two main components while getting tyres aligned are the camber and the caster in the arms of the car. These should be in the right proportion. If its 0.5 positive in the right side, it should be 0.5 positive on the left side. If it is adjusted in a variation, make sure to ask the mechanic why it is done. The caster also follows the same rule.

3. Rotation: Uneven tread wear and tear also happens due to the reason that the front tyres exert more pressure than the rear. Since during turning, the front tyres are at a higher pressure. To make sure an even tread wear, get your tyres rotated when the mechanic advices you. This happens in a criss-cross fashion. The front right tyre will be swapped with the rear left side tyre. Another way is by rotating the tyres in a clockwise direction and using the spare wheel as well. This makes use of the spare wheel also and the wear and tear in even through all five tyres.

4. When to go for new tyres: A number of reasons and actions of your car will show when to go in for new tyres. Do use the one rupee coin regularly to see the tread wear pattern and when it is almost worn out, tyres need to be changed. Also, go for a set of four or five tyres depending on the type of rotation technique that is followed to avoid mismatch and irregular wear and tear.
