A debt-ridden farmer committed suicide at Nagla village near Lehragaga on Saturday morning by hanging himself from a ceiling fan.

Raghbir Singh, 45, owned around 2 acres land. He was alone in the house as his wife had gone to her parents’ house along with their two children. Raghbir’s parents were living with his brother Darshan Singh. The police was informed and the body was sent for post-mortem at a Sunam hospital.

“He ended his life due to poverty. We have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal procedure,” said station house officer, Chhajli police station.

Meanwhile, in Mansa’s Jhanda Kalan village, a landless farmer, Dalvir Singh, 45, committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance on Friday evening as he failed to repay a loan of Rs 6 lakh which he took for his daughter’s marriage.

He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter. According to his relatives, Dalvir took loan four months ago. He used to take land on lease for farming. He consumed some poisonous substance on Friday night and later died in a hospital in Sirsa. More than 10 cases of suicide by farmers and farm labourers have been reported from the district in the past two months.

:( :(. govt should take suitable actions to prevent such incidences in future by declaring farm sector as organised labor sector. Then only exploitation of farmer would stop. Merely announcing ex-gracia grant won't stop this.
