Every social network has that one unique element which sets it apart from others. There are no two opinions about the 140 character limit being that element for Twitter, but this could soon change according to a new report.
Twitter is set to increase the character limit on its platform from 140 to 10,000. The micro blogging site will launch this feature sometime in the first quarter of 2016, added the report. The project, which internally has been referred to as “beyond 140,” is still in its testing phase. Apparently, tweets with longer characters will still show the 140 characters and users will have to click in order to expand the tweet.
“We didn’t start Twitter with a 140 character restriction. We added that early on to fit into a single SMS message,” Dorsey wrote in the tweet. We’ve spent a lot of time observing what people are doing on Twitter, and we see them taking screenshots of text and tweeting it.We’re not going to be shy about building more utility and power into Twitter for people.”
co-founder and CEO Jack Dorsey tweeted a screenshot of text.
If the report is true, it would be one of the biggest changes ever to Twitter’s design as the 140 characters limit is what defines the platform. Twitter has not determined what the final tweet character limit will be. In August last year, Twitter dropped the 140 character limit for Direct Messages to upto 10,000 characters.
