Touring to Design Lightweight Gumpert Apollo for Geneva Debut
If you have been holding off on buying that Gumpert Apollo because you just aren’t sure you can live with it on daily basis, good news has arrived. The supercar maker has enlisted coachbuilder extraordinaire Touring Superleggera to create a new vehicle that might be slightly more practical.
Touring Superleggera has spent the last 80 years modifying and restoring exotic cars. Their latest work has focused on turning high-end luxury cars (i.e. Bentleys, Maseratis, etc.) into shooting brakes and wagons. Their experience in high-end luxury cars makes them a perfect match for Gumpert’s next program.
Gumpert’s previous car was a race car poorly masquerading as a road car. While the Apollo’s perfromance is phenomenal, only enthusiasts are willing to live with the inconvenience of a two-seater, barely-civilized supercar. Gumpert’s next project will still be use a carbon-fiber monocoque and composite body panels to minimize weight. They will also stick with the mid-engined two-seater layout as on the Apollo. The previous car was powered by an Audi 4.2-liter twin turbo V-8 that produced 650 horsepower. No word on if they will procure a different sort of engine, or stick with powertrain sourced from Ingolstadt.
A mix of German Engineering with Italian luxury sounds awfully good to us. What are your opinions on what should be a truly world class automobile?
