The statement added that Rajarathinam had requested to be relieved for a month from the post pending completion of the police investigation. On Tuesday, the 31-year-old nun lodged a complaint with the police that Rajarathinam had raped her repeatedly and warned her not to reveal the matter to anyone.

The nun claimed that Rajarathinam had first raped her in 2006. Since he had warned her of dire consequences if she revealed the incident to anyone, the nun did not lodge a complaint, she said. But, she said, the principal had raped her again in 2008. He then began to take her to other places and continued to rape her, emboldened by the fact that she did not complain to the police, she said in the complaint. She said she was forced to approach the police as she wanted to put an end to the abuse. She also claimed that she conceived twice and was forced to have abortions.

The police has registered a case under sections 376 and 506 (1) of the IPC against Rajarathinam but is yet to arrest him. The police took the nun to the government hospital where a medical tests were performed on her on the directions of a judicial magistrate’s court. The police is awaiting the test results before proceeding with the case.

In the meantime, a group of activists owing allegiance to People’s Art and Literary Association (PALA) staged a protest in front of the college demanding the immediate arrest of Rajarathinam.
