Three Countries Targeted by Biggest Cyber Attack

A long-lasting 5-year campaign exposed networks in 72 largest entities throughout the globe, including a number of governments, ASEAN, and IOC, as well as the world anti-doping agency.

It appeared that within the biggest ever cyber attacks uncovered to date, the intruders managed to have broken into networks of the Indian government and UN and US defence organizations. Meanwhile, the cyber security experts suggested China was the culprit.

The list of targets for the intrusions in a 5-year campaign includes 72 largest organizations throughout the globe, including the governments of Vietnam, India, United States, South Korea, ASEAN, IOC and even the globe anti-doping outfit, according to a McAfee report. Meanwhile, among the breached network there are those of U.N. secretariat in Geneva, a U.S. Energy Department lab and a dozen of largest American Defense companies engaged in top secret futuristic weapons system.

In fact, the cyber snooping seems to have been going on for a few years now, but was only discovered now. According to the report, the hacking was traced to at least one “state actor” behind the intrusion, but his name wasn’t disclosed. Dmitri Alperovitch, McAfee vice president, was cited in a 14-page sensational report released a few days ago, saying that the outfit had been taken aback by the audacity of the perpetrators.

Still, it is an open question what really is happening to all this information. However, if even a small part of it was used to build better competing goods or beat competitors at key negotiations, then the suffered loss will actually represent a massive economic threat.

McAfee claimed they have notified all the 72 victims of the cyber attacks, and now all of them are under investigations by law enforcement agencies all over the globe. However, Mr. Alperovitch declined to both reveal the names of the departments of the hacked governments and provide more details of the entities infiltrated.

Actually, this was considered the biggest transfer of intellectual property ever, which means that the scale at which this was occurring was very frightening. Meanwhile, the organization confirmed that their researchers discovered logs of the hacking during review of the contents of a “command and control server” within its investigations into security breaches.
