Mumbai: A chemical tanker MT Fairchem Bogey, with 21 Indian crew members on board, was hijacked Saturday by pirates at Salalah port in Oman, India's government shipping agency said.

The federal Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) said here in the afternoon that it had received information about the MT Fairchem Bogey, a Marshall Island flagged vessel, hijacked from Messrs Anglo-Eastern Ship Management (I) Private Limited Mumbai, which manages the ship.

Monitoring

All the maritime agencies, including the Indian Navy and the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) have been informed about the hijack.

The Shipping Directorate is monitoring the situation.

Though there is no official confirmation as to who is behind the hijack of MT Fairchem Bogey, the authorities have reason to believe that it must be the handiwork of Somali pirates who have proved to be a nightmare for merchant vessels and tankers operating in the Indian Ocean waters.

Navy gets new vessel

The Indian Navy Saturday augmented its capabilities by inducting into its fleet the INS Satpura, the second of three Shivalik class stealth frigates built by Mazagon Dock Ltd.

"I believe that with the commissioning of INS Satpura we are taking another decisive stride in this direction today," Admiral Nirmal Verma, Chief of Naval Staff of the Indian Navy said.

Admiral Verma said that India's destiny to take her place amongst the top economies of the world was inextricably linked with ensuring unhindered global trade in a secure maritime environment.
