ABI Research has released a report about its study of the tablet market. The report highlights that the April to June quarter of the current year saw media tablet shipments reach nearly 25 million units with total shipments rising 36 percent quarter-over-quarter, and 77 percent year-over-year. The report added that Apple iPad shipments constituted for almost 69 percent of the global volumes in this period. These figures were obtained from a preliminary assessment of vendor share by ABI Research. Some of other good performances in this quarter came from the South Korean company, Samsung Electronics, the shipments of which constituted of 8.1 percent of the volume globally in this period, while shipments of Asus accounted for 4.0 percent. RIM, however, witnessed a significant decline in this period. Its shipments constituted for 1 percent of the globally volume in this period. In one of its interesting predictions, the report expect the worldwide shipments of media tablets to go beyond 100 million units in 2012.

More than 100 million units of tablets to be shipped by end of this year

Apple's 17.0 million tablet shipments in Q2 2012 came quite close to the total worldwide shipments of 17.3 million for all vendors in 2010. The report here adds, "Company representatives noted that nearly 1 million of its iPad 2 devices were shipped to US education customers during the period, which contributed to the company's growth but also its continuing average selling price (ASP) decline. ABI Research estimates a 4 percent drop in ASP for the company QoQ and nearly 19 percent YoY".

The report highlighted further that despite the shipment restrictions on Samsung, the company continued its hold over the second position in this period, followed by Amazon and Asus. It also pointed out that the period had also witnessed the entry of new players such as Google and Microsoft with their tablet offerings. "ABI Research expects the new products to impact share both positively from Google Nexus 7 and negatively from Microsoft's Surface tablets of Google's Android OS used on most tablet models. The tablet market is on track for 102 to 110 million shipments worldwide for full-year 2012," adds Jeff Orr of ABI Research.

The report found that most tablet shipments only supported Wi-Fi. Hence, their use was restricted to homes, facilities, and public hotspots. It added further that in Q2 2012, less than 27 percent of new shipments came with a mobile broadband (3G/ 4G) modem module, which is down 12 percent year-over-year.
