The Income Tax Department has failed to meet the target of tax collection for the past two consecutive years and target given by the government in the fiscal year of 2015-2016 will also not be achieved due to lack of tax collectors, said Joint Council of Action of Income Tax Federation and Income Tax Gazetted Officers’ Association.
The target of tax collection in the financial year of 2013-2014 was Rs 6,68,109 crore though the actual collection was Rs 6,38,495 crore.
In 2014-2015, the target was Rs 7, 58,421 crore tax though actual collection was Rs 6,95,988 crore, said JCAs president Ajay Goyal and Ashok Kumar Kanaujia and joint convener Bhaskar Bhattacharya in a joint statement.
They said reason for failure in achieving the target is most of the posts up to the level of Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax and Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax are lying vacant for the past more than two years.
