Three of a family were killed and two children orphaned when the bike they were travelling on was hit by a speeding truck in southeast Delhi’s Kalindi Kunj on Tuesday afternoon.

CRPF personnel Raj Kumar (38), his wife, Seema (35), and daughter, Ritu (12), died on the spot. His two sons Avinash (7) and Surya (4) escaped with minor injuries.

The family was returning to Delhi from Noida after a holiday.

Police arrested the truck driver, Rambir. A case of rash and negligent driving causing death was registered against him. Police are questioning Rambir.

According to the police, Kumar, who was posted at old JNU, was the only one wearing a helmet. When he reached Kalindi Kunj, a speeding truck hit the bike’s edge from behind. While the couple and their daughter fell to the left, the two boys fell to the right.

The truck dragged the bike for 100 metres and turned towards the left, running over the couple and their daughter. “The truck mowed down the couple and crushed their daughter under the rear wheel. The three died on the spot while the other two, escaped with minor injuries,” a senior police officer said.

Following the incident, passersby chased the truck driver and intercepted him. The locals thrashed him and handed him over to police.

“We heard the woman cry for her children, after which she fainted. The truck had mercilessly crushed the family under its wheels. We managed to catch hold of the driver and even made a call to the police control room. The two boys were rushed to the hospital. Even they sustained head injuries and were unconscious,” an eyewitness told HT.

Police said the two boys were not informed about their parents’ death. “They fell unconscious after the accident. They are being treated at a hospital. They have been asking about their sister and mother but have not been told anything about their death. In their statement, they said a truck hit them from behind and that they saw the truck running over their parents and sister. Their statements are not consistent,” a police source said.

The police have also accessed the CCTV footage of the area.
