The smartwatch category has been seeing a lot of interested companies since last year. Apple was reported hinting at the possibility of an iOS-powered smartwatch. Google was also seen filing a patent for its version of the technology. Now it seems like Sony is also looking at a new addition to its SmartWatch line-up next week.

The smartwatch is a small display which can be used to communicate with an Android smartphone via Bluetooth. Users can access text messages, social media updates as well as manage calls or music. Sony was seen releasing quite a few posts that were sent out from the official Xperia account, which hinted at a possible launch at the Mobile Asia Expo 2013 trade show that will be held in Shanghai from June 26 to June 28.

Sony may be launching a new SmartWatch at the MAE 2013 next week

The most obvious hint was a tweet that was posted on Friday, which said “Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock” with a photo of Sony’s current SmartWatch that was released in April last year.

Another tweet showed the results of a survey which claimed that one out of every three smartphone user wanted a smartwatch as well.

One of the tweets put up highlighted that Sony has been in the smartwatch category since 2007. Another one took users down memory lane by talking about the Sony Walkman by saying, “Wearable tech is in our DNA, Remember WALKMAN now.. ?” The company also tweeted that its SmartWatch is the only one in the market with “200 #firstgen apps on @ GooglePlay and growing.”

The company has pointedly added the hashtag #itstime and #MAE13, which stands for Mobile Asia Expo 2013, on each of its tweets. With a lot of big players entering the smartwatch category, it should be interesting to see what Sony will have to offer to differentiate itself from its competitors.
