Sonia Gandhi treated for dehydration, fever; shifted to Delhi hospital

After spending Tuesday night in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Research & Referral (Army) Hospital, Congress president Sonia Gandhi is being shifted to west Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.
The 69-year-old Gandhi was taken to R&R’s emergency at around midnight after a chartered plane flew her back from Varanasi, where she was forced to cut short a roadshow after taking ill.
The Congress leader was treated for fever, high blood pressure and dehydration.
“She was put on IV-fluids as she had massive electrolyte imbalance. She was stablised at R&R before being shifted to Ganga Ram Hospital,” a source said.
Gandhi had been running fever for the past three days because of which she also missed Parliament on Monday.
“We were told she was dehydrated and had fever and body ache, so we sent a team of specialists from medicine, cardiology and gastroenterology to the Varanasi airport on Tuesday night, but she had left for Delhi by then,” said Dr OP Upadhyay, medical superintendent, Banaras Hindu University’s Sir Sunderlal Hospital in Varanasi.
Her children, Rahul and Priyanka, and several Congress leaders were with her at R&R.
The Congress chief’s was in Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency, to launch the party’s campaign for Uttar Pradesh elections that are due next year. The roadshow was well received as huge crowds greeted Gandhi.​
