That smoking can result in hazardous diseases like cancer, heart attack, lung disease and impotence in men is common knowledge. A new survey conducted on Asian men at Far Eastern Memorial Hospital in Taipei now reveals that it can cause baldness too. The male pattern of baldness is often seen to be a hereditary thing in most families and is determined by male sex hormones, while in some cases it also induced by factors like diet and stress. The new study now highlights how smoking can lead to hair loss by lessening the blood supply to the hair follicles.

Genetically, Asian men are known to nurture lesser chances of going bald in comparison to white Caucasian men say researchers in the journal, Archives of Dermatology. However, the affect of smoking on hair health is so strong that it will not spare even Asian men this time. Talking about the research, many doctors have supported the report and state they are not really surprised. It is learnt that more than 700 Taiwanese men with an average age of 65 participated in this research.

After collecting necessary details pertaining the age at which these Taiwanese men began losing their hair, their smoking history, height and weight as well as by via blood samples, the researches established finally that cigarettes lead to notably more hair loss. Smoke from cigarette contains more than 4,800 chemicals, out of which 69 are known to cause cancer. Smoking can also lead to acute bronchitis, heart illness and other disorders like slowed wound healing, impotence, infertility, and peptic ulcer disease.

As per WHO reports, tobacco is the second biggest cause of death in the world. It kills near about five million people, which is like one out of every 10 adult deaths - every annum on a global scale. The report further states that half of the people who smoke or consume tobacco even in other forms these days, which is about 650 million people, will in the long run be killed by this habit of theirs. Apart from the smoked forms like cigarettes, bidis and cigars, several other smokeless pattern of consumption also exist which account for nearly 40 per cent of the total tobacco use.
