Skype for Windows 8 gets HD video support, better video messaging capabilities
Skype for Windows 8 has been updated with support for high definition (HD) video sharing. Skype's Aga Guzik elaborates in a blog post that depending on the sender's camera, available network bandwidth and receiver's setup on x86 devices, Skype users may now be able to send 720p video and receive 1080p videos.
Next up is improvements to the video messaging feature on Skype. Microsoft had previewed the feature for Skype on Windows 8 Modern UI early last month, and with this release, it claims to have improved the feature's stability and has even introduced improved notifications. With Skype Video Messaging, users can send an offline video message to another user, which wasn’t possible earlier. It is as simple as sending an offline instant text message. The other user can conveniently watch the message whenever he/she is online. Each video message sent can be up to three minutes long and can be viewed for up to 90 days by free users. On the other hand, premium users can keep and view the message as long as they want.
In the latest release, Microsoft has also resolved some previously known issues. These include an issue with file transfer. A glitch in the file transfer feature caused Skype to crash after the sender initiated the process. It also mentions a certain glitch with call connect, wherein Skype crashed when users attempted to reconnect in some cases.
It also lists a couple of known issues with this latest release – both pertain to the video messaging feature. Owing to a glitch, while video messages should be displayed in chat history, they currently do not show up. Also, the video message thumbnail redirects to record flow, instead of playback when cache is cleared.
