Guru Nanak is the first Guru of the Sikhs, he founded the Sikh Faith. He taught that everyone is equal and said that all are the children one of God. He did away with the rituals and idol worshipping. He belived in truthful living and meditation on the name of God. He started a free kitchen or Langar and wrote the Japji Sahib, a prayer that Sikhs recite each morning.

Guru Angad Dev Ji isthe second Guru of the Sikhs. He was a disciple of Guru Nanak's teachings and through his humbleness was chosen to succeed Guru Nanak. He encouraged people to learn Punjabi and introduced Gurmukhi script.

Guhe Emperor Akbar, who was asked to sit on the floor and eat a meal with the Guru. The highlighted fact that in the Guru's eyes, all were equal, and no one person was higher than any other even though he may be an Emperor. Guru Amardas wrote the Anand Sahib, a prayer that is said near the end of every worship.

Guru Ramdas is the forth Guru. He established a city called Ramdaspur, where he built a pool. This city later became known as Amritsar, the pool of nector, and is now the centre of the Sikhs faith.

Guru Arjun Dev is the fifth Guru of the Sikhs. He was the youngest son of Guru Ramdas. He laid the foundations of the Golden Temple which is built in the pool built by his father. Guru Arjun is most famous for collecting together the hymns of the first four Gurus and other writers. He compiled the Granth Sahib and the Sukhmani prayer - the treasure of peace.

Guru Harkrishan was the youngest son of Guru Har Rai and was only 5 years old when he became Guru. He spent his short life looking after sick and needy and he died of small pox at the age of only eight years.

Guru Tegh Bahadur was the youngest son of Guru Hargobind and became the ninth Guru. At the request of Hindu priests from Kashmir, the Guru went to plead with Emperor Aurangzeb to stop forcibly converting Hindus to Muslims. The Guru was beheaded by the emperor when he could not be persuaded to convert onto a Muslim.

Guru Gobind Singh created the khalsa, the body of Saint-Soliders and gave the Sikhs the symbols of the Khalsa known as the 'Five Ks'. He also gave the Sikhs new names - all men would be called "Singh" which means lion, and all women "Kaur" which means princess. These new Sikhs did not recognise differences in caste or religion.
