Solar power for the home is a green technology still waiting to deliver on its promise for a lot of consumers. At the moment, having solar modules installed on your roof is expensive, and the power output not enough to completely replace your typical energy supplier’s feed unless you spend more and get more cells installed.
While we still have a long way to go to achieve a completely green solution to home energy using solar tech, Sanyo is doing its best to increase the amount of energy generated from the solar cells it produces. This week the Japanese company has announced plans to mass produce its latest solar cells which are also the most efficient available.
The HIT solar cells achieve a cell efficiency of 21.6% and a module efficiency of 19%. Compared to crystalline solar cells they are also much more efficient at energy generation as the reduction in output caused by temperature increases is less.
Sanyo expects to start offering the new cells in Europe first, with the ramp-up in production allowing for a February 2011 launch.
