Agra: Two young Swedish women, who were living together in New Delhi for the past one year, married in traditional Hindu style at a temple in Agra, a priest said.
According to Baba Dharam Das, who conducted the marriage on Saturday at a temple in Agra Cantonment, an autorickshaw driver brought the two women to the temple and persuaded him to get them married according to Vedic rites.
The autorickshaw driver made arrangements for the marriage in which, after exchanging garlands, Sandra, 19, marked the head of 18-year-old Sarah with vermilion. They then made seven circuits around a fire in the traditional marriage custom.
A large crowd collected at the Shiva temple to witness the unusual marriage. The priest said the ceremony had attracted much local curiosity as homosexuality is illegal in India.
The couple told media after the marriage that the two were living together for a year in Vasant Vihar area of Delhi and were deeply in love. They said they wanted to get married in Agra, which is home to the Taj Mahal - the monument of love.
The duo arrived in Agra on Friday and on Saturday, they started contacting people to help them get married. An autorickshaw driver agreed to work it out after a few other temples had refused to entertain their request.
Dharam Das told them that such a marriage was not recognized in Hinduism. But they claimed that in their society and country it was legal. "Although the Hindu system of marriage doesn't allow such relationships or marriages, I am impressed with the love that the two women have for the monument of love," Das told the Mail Today.
Mahant Yogesh Puri of the Mankameshwar temple said: "Foreigners are mocking our system and misusing the liberal parameters. Such waywardness should be stopped."
