Three crew members of an Indian Navy's Chetak helicopter escaped miraculously while a sailor was killed when it crashed into a river near Anakapalli town in Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday.

The accident occurred when the IN 468 chopper touched a high tension wire while flying low near Sarada river bridge at Tummapala village, 55km from Vizag. Sailor Krishna Kumar, 30, from Patna, died at NTR government hospital in Anakapalli.

Pilot Lieutenant Commander Hritikesh from Bangalore, co-pilot Lieutenant Tushar Sharma from Lucknow and Sub-Lieutenant Deepika Misra from Bihar, an air traffic controller who was on an 'area familiarization sortie', escaped with minor injuries. At the time of the accident, there was no power supply in the wire which probably saved their lives.

Sources said the sailor suffered internal bleeding in head and vomited blood immediately after the crash. "As the chopper came down, it hit the water with heavy force. Krishna Kumar had concussion, while the others could wriggle out," an official said.
