The Punjab Government will not “interfere administratively” in Sarbat Khalsa called by Sikh bodies in Amritsar on November 10.
The jathedars of three Takhts — Gurbachan Singh (Akal Takht), Mal Singh (Kesgarh Sahib) and Gurmukh Singh (Damdama Sahib) — may be asked to step down, based on the response received by Sikh bodies in the run-up to Sarbat Khalsa.
The Shiromani Akali Dal core committee, which met today, decided that only if the response received by the Sikh bodies was overwhelming, the three jathedars could be asked to step down.
Sikh bodies have already formed an organising committee to hold the congregation in Amritsar, for which land has been taken on rent on the Amritsar-Tarn Taran road.
A strategy for galvanising support for Sarbat Khalsa will be discussed at a meeting tomorrow.
The Akali Dal has decided to re-establish contact with the people by holding “Sadbhawna” rallies across the state beginning November 23 from Bathinda. The committee members discussed the prevailing situation in Punjab and asked the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister to ensure that law and order was maintained.
Gurdev Singh Badal and Charanjit Singh Atwal were the only absentees in the 18-member core committee meeting that lasted around three hours.
