After coming across several rumors in the past, a new report now claims that Reliance Jio will commercially launch its 4G services on August 15. Currently, Jio’s services are available for the company’s employees, as well as anyone who buys a LYF smartphone. The report further states that Jio’s first plan will be called ‘Freedom’, which will offer free local and STD calls to users. BGR India has reached out to Jio for a confirmation. Sources privy to the launch plans, however, confirmed to BGR India that there is some buzz around an August launch but were not confident about the plan being called ‘Freedom’.

According to ET, Jio’s plan is to launch its services on Independence Day by giving users freedom from having to pay for voice calls. According to the publication’s source, “The teams had been forewarned about a launch thrice earlier. But this time, the management means business.”

One of the talking points however will be the Freedom plan, which will no doubt have a big impact on the industry. Most carriers still get a bulk of revenue from voice calls, which is likely to change after Jio’s launch. To get the Freedom plan, Jio users will need to buy data packs which are priced from Rs 80 for 1GB of data.

Jio already has over 6 million users now that includes around 1.5 million of its own users, and another 4.5 million Reliance Communications (RCom) consumers who were migrated from CDMA to 4G. A recent report claimed that Jio has already bagged the sixth spot in India for data usage, with its users having consumed 13 million GB of data at an average 0.6GB per user.

It is easy to get excited about Jio’s imminent launch, but we must warn you that there have been several reports in the past few months that claim to have knowledge about the launch. Ever since Jio started testing its 4G services among its employees last year, there have been reports about a launch every few months. Some even claimed that Jio was waiting to iron out some issues before rolling out its services by the end of this year. With still no official announcement from Jio, we would advise you to take this report with a pinch of salt.
