We (read as urban people) are living in the digital age, connect with the
world with ease through the Internet. Net-banking, e-mail, e-commerce,
e-learning are not new to us. But have you ever thought about 600,000
villages or the 70% of Indians who reside in the villages of India. Web2.0,
social bookmarking, sharing and generating content on net, all this jargons
comes naturally to us when we talk about web or internet. But what about
those 70% Indians who still have to catch up with this digital age. Are we
living in theage of "digital divide"? Yes, we are. But, is there any action,
which is going on to reduce this digital divide? Yes, there is a project
called e-bharat worth $ 1300cr.

What is e-bharat?

E-bharat is a project by Union Ministry of Information Technology (Govt. of India)
under National e-Governance Action Plan (NeGAP) to empower the 600,000 villages
in India by providing direct technology and internet access to the village entrepreneurs
through over 100,000 multipurpose kiosks (by 2007) to promote services like e-learning,
e-training, e-teaching, e-health, telemedicine, e-farming, e-tourism, e-entertainment
and e-commerce etc.

Various bodies ranging from center, state governments, corporates, NGOs,
universities, hospitals, insurance companies to tourism and entertainment
companies will be involved in this project and collectively participate to
execute it. It will really empower rural Indians where the basic problems
still exists? Keep watching!!!
