Chandigarh September 21:

Though, Punjab continues to reel under deficient power supply, the study conducted by Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) revealed that the people of the State consume maximum power in the country, followed by Gujarat.

As per Assocham’s study, Punjab tops the chart at the per capita power consumption of electricity in the country. Already, the State is dawdling back in getting rid of the variance between the demand and supply of the energy. With the study, Punjab is now regarded as a power-starved State with the total per capita consumption of electricity at 1,506.3 kwh (kilowatt-hour) closely followed by Gujarat at 1,330.8 kwh.

Assocham secretary general DS Rawat stated that the annual per capita power consumption of Punjab is 1,506.3 kwh followed by Gujarat with 1,330.8 kwh and Haryana at 1,208.2 kwh, found to be on the upper side. Rawat added that besides Himachal Pradesh, all other States carries peak deficit with Punjab having deficit of 24.3.

Being an agrarian State and with the unpredicted weather conditions, the electricity ultimately play a pivotal role in the development of the State’s economy. Of late there has been a steep rise in the demand for electricity in the State, especially during the peak harvesting season.

Finding these steps not to be enough, a senior Government official said: “The demand for electricity in the State is price inelastic but income elastic for majority of consuming sectors. So, the price hike will be ineffective in regulating and managing demand unless price is varied in an hourly basis.”
