PUNJAB GUV CALLS FOR COLLECTIVE GLOBAL ACTION AGAINST DISEASES


Chandigarh April 6:
The Punjab Governor and Administrator, Union Territory Chandigarh Gen (Retd) SF Rodrigues, in a message on the occasion of World Health Day called for collective global action and a professional approach to combat diseases and for making our healthcare system more responsive.
There is a need for stepping up research-based scientific programmes to control communicable diseases besides, covering every aspect of our health endeavour including nutrition, maternal and child health, environmental sanitation, intensive research and health education.
Appreciating the theme of World Health Day - 2008 "Protect Health From Climate Change", General Rodrigues said that the whole world is seized of this grave problem and this issue is being debated in various national and international fora.
He said that global warming and climatic changes are bound to impact on the health of individuals and society, at large. It has a more direct effect on people living in tropical and sub-tropical areas and the countries, which are already struggling to fight against diseases like malaria, malnutrition, polio, cholera and waterborne and infectious disorders.
A mass awareness and action oriented approach is, therefore, needed at all levels to check the occurrence of ill-affects of weather related calamities on health and to evolve technologically advanced strategies for improving ecological standards and to maintain bio-sphere balance.
General Rodrigues further said that besides taking steps for upgrading standards of health of individuals through different programmes, health education is also an essential tool for mobilising public opinion, which must focus on bringing about changes in attitudes, mindset, lifestyles and the behavioural pattern of our communities and to make them sensitive for maintaining clean and pollution free environment, proper sanitation in their homes and personal hygienic living which automatically leads to a healthy environment.
He appealed to the medical professionals to renew their resolve to work with commitment and dedication and help the Administration in speedy implementation of various healthcare programmes to meet the goal of health for all especially disadvantaged and vulnerable sections of society.
