Chandigarh October 26:

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said the hike in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of wheat is not sufficient for farmers and demanded its upward revision.

"The hike is not sufficient...It would not only deal a crushing blow to the farm sector but also seriously endanger the country's food security," he said here. MSP for wheat, to be marketed in 2012-13, has been recently increased by the Centre to Rs 1,285, an increase of 14.7 per cent (by Rs 165 a quintal) over last year's MSP.

The CM said although a MSP of Rs 2,200 per quintal was necessary to give a boost to agriculture and secure food security in the country, the Centre could at least have quoted Rs 1,800. Demanding the Centre to review the decision and announce an upward revision in the MSP, Badal said, "The decision shows how insensitive policy makers at the Centre are to the agony of the farmers already reeling under the impact of back breaking hikes in the prices of farm inputs."
