Heading for Punjab State Assembly elections, the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) is gearing up to formulate an election agenda in New Delhi.
A three-member-delegation of Punjab State BJP, including in-charge Shanta Kumar, president Ashwani Sharma and chief of Punjab BJP legislative party Tikshan Sood met national general secretary and poll in-charge JP Nadda in New Delhi. BJP sources revealed that Nadda has asked them to prepare a list of the candidates and party workers with their profiles. He has also asked them to compile names of the poll winning candidates and submit it to the party office as soon as possible.
On the behalf of the party high command, Nadda has asked them to concentrate and focus on the same seats on which they were victorious in last State Assembly polls. BJP has won 19 Assembly seats, which is a record so far, all of them belonging to the urban areas. Though the BJP vote bank in Punjab is more based on the urban areas, the party high command has instructed them to keep a tab on the rural voters also. Sources revealed that following the guidelines of the high command, a major change in the distribution of party tickets and allocations of the Assembly seats is expected.
Moreover, the high command has also instructed them to shun the political gimmicks in the party. They have made it clear that this time ticket allocations would be totally based on the candidate’s ‘clear image’ in the society. Shanta Kumar told reporters that the meeting was held in view of the State Assembly elections. We have talked on the several issues related to the Punjab polls. However, he refused to divulge further details.
No special instructions from the party high command have come however. He is being assigned with the work of mobilisation of the party workers in the wake of polls. The State BJP has already got a bend with the allegations of corruption and graft charges. Following the corruption charges on their two Ministers, BJP’s high command had directed all their five Ministers to resign. Since then, the BJP in Punjab is not considering good results like the last Assembly election in 2007.
The party does not want to leave any stone unturned in the direction to accommodate vote banks by putting to use the issue of corruption, inflation and black money prevailing in the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre.
