Prayers were offered in mosques, idgahs and madarasas across the state to mark the festival of Id-ul-Zuha here today. Prayers were also held for the victims of Mecca stampede.
In Dehradun, prayers were offered at the main Chakrata Road idgah at 9 am. A large number of devotees thronged the idgah. Prayers were also held at the Raza mosque, Lohianagar, and the Inamullah building mosque. The prayers at the Paltan Bazar mosque were held at 9.30 am.
Shahr Kazi Mohammed Ahmed Quasmi conducted the prayers at the Chakrata Road idgah. Chief Minister Harish Rawat and state Congress president Kishore Upadhyay along with social activists visited the idgah to greet their Muslim brethren.
According to the tradition, Muslims sacrificed goats and distributed their meat among family members, friends and the poor. It is believed that a sacrificed goat is a reflection of one’s own spirit of sacrifice for the almighty and is essential for achieving communion with ‘Allah’.
The revellers also thronged the market areas to buy new clothes, gifts and sweets. Hindus, Sikhs and other community members also greeted their Muslim brethren on the occasion.
Reports of Id-ul-Zuha celebrations were also received from other parts of Uttarakhand as well. The festival also marks the performance of Haj in Saudi Arabia.
