A five-member team of the Central agriculture department was manhandled by members of the Mansa Pesticide Dealers Association here today. The team was here to take samples in connection with a multi-crore pesticide scam reported in the state recently.
The visiting team was gheraoed as soon as it reached the Mansa grain market around 10 am and started taking samples. An altercation ensued between pesticide dealers and Central team members, who were then manhandled. The police reached the spot and controlled the situation. The police said the Central team did not inform them about its visit. Sarbjit Singh, ADO (Enforcement) said, “We didn’t have any communication about their visit.”
Mansa (City) SHO Harvinder Sran said, “The visiting team was led by Devinder Kumar, Assistant Director, Department of Agriculture (Ministry of Agriculture). No case has been registered as the matter was sorted out amicably and no complaint was filed.” There was no manhandling of the officials. Pesticide dealers had only gheraoed them, he claimed.
Tarsem Middha, president of the Mansa Pesticide Dealers Association, said, “We are on strike for the past few days over the registration of cases against some pesticide dealers in the state. Today, we gheraoed the Central team. We will not allow anyone to take samples till our strike ends.”
