Jet Airways Flight Delayed
A Jet Airways flight to Bhopal from Mumbai was delayed by two hours on Friday morning because 17 in a group of 80 passengers who were heading to Bhopal for a wedding held the flight and co-passengers ransom after they allegedly intimidated the staff by using their political influence.
The group of 80 people from an influential Gujarati family were heading for a wedding in Bhopal. The tickets of the economy class were booked separately for them. Seventeen members of this group turned up late. After they realised that they would not be able to board the flight, they started protesting and intimidating the staff of the aircraft and the passengers who had already boarded.
The boarding of 9W-7083 scheduled to depart from Mumbai was going smoothly, and all the 156 seats were occupied in the economy class with passengers on the first-come-first-serve basis. The 17 people who were late started creating a nuisance on being informed that there were no seats available. They used their power and their political influence to threaten the staff and co-passengers, as reported by The Times of India.
Chaos reigned when these seventeen people reached all the way to the aircraft door without a boarding pass.
After being informed of the situation and further discussions, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) asked Jet Airways to offer a sum of Rs 10,000 to each passenger who agreed to offload the flight and give their seat to the late comers.
The altercations between the passengers and the late comers resulted in the delay in take off by three hours. Five passengers deboarded voluntarily.
The flight was airborne by 8 am, as the pilot announced that the Bhopal Airport was to be closed at 9 am for renovation. It landed in Bhopal at 9.10 am, against the prior scheduled time of 7.10 am.
“A technical glitch resulted in Jet Airways flight on December 2, being overbooked which led to confirmed guest on the trip being denied boarding”, said a Jet Airways spokesperson.
The glitch was identified and rectified for subsequent bookings. The offloaded guests were compensated duly as per DGCA guidelines.
The idea that money gives us the power to take whatever we want, even if by force, is deeply embedded in the minds of many people. Technical glitch notwithstanding, it is behaviour like this that leads to stricter rules being enforced. The act of a few makes it difficult for everyone.
